Los Angeles Power Disco at The Anthem

It’s about twenty degrees in Washington D.C. on the second night of Zayn’s sold out show at The Anthem. Fans have waited patiently outside of the venue all day, and buzz with anxiety as doors finally open. They chatter and squeal as nerves turn into excitement, and as the clock strikes eight o’clock, the show begins.

Los Angeles Power Disco hits the stage with an electric force. Fans are drawn in by the two-person band, and the atmosphere changes immediately. While Sarah switches between the keys and guitar, she still finds time to sing animatedly into the mic. On the other side of the stage, Jordy’s red bass shines in the light as he grins down at the crowd below. The duo don’t talk much as they play through their set, but they don’t have to – their energy carries them the entire time. The whole thing feels kind of like a coming-of-age film, in the best way possible. The chemistry between Sarah and Jordy is palpable, and the way it reverberates through the crowd makes the whole room feel alive.

As the clock nears eight-thirty, the duo on stage share a knowing look before ramping up for the last song: a fan favorite cover of Gimme Gimme Gimme by Abba. The intensity in the room is multiplied tenfold. Jordy moves to stand at the edge of the stage, the closest he can get to the screaming fans below. They reach up eagerly, attempting to touch him, his eyes closed slightly as he takes it all in. Towards the middle of the room, Sarah has abruptly left the stage and bounced right up to the barricade, smiling wildly as fans reach out to hold her steady. The lyrics “won’t somebody help me chase the shadows away” are shouted loudly from the crowd to the band and vice versa, a physical display of the vitality manifested in the room.

As the band leaves the stage after another successful set, fans take to social media to express their newfound love and appreciation for the duo. They’ll wait another thirty minutes or so for the headliner they so eagerly prepared to see, happy they got to the venue early enough to experience an opener like Los Angeles Power Disco.
